Teeth Cleanings & Exams
Though patients may feel some mild discomfort during a teeth cleaning, these routine treatments are generally not painful. During a cleaning, a dental hygienist uses specialized tools to non-invasively remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surfaces of a patient’s teeth and along their gumline. For some people, this procedure causes only minor irritation or a feeling of pressure, but not actual pain.
If an individual has especially sensitive gums or significant tartar buildup, they may experience more discomfort. However, this discomfort is usually minor, temporary, and easily manageable.
To ensure minimal discomfort, inform your dental hygienist about any issues you have with dental or periodontal (gum) sensitivity that might make the process painful for you. This proactive communication allows them to adjust their technique or use a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort.
Regular cleanings aim to minimize discomfort over time by preventing plaque and tartar buildup and the more severe issues they cause. Also, practicing good oral hygiene at home can make your professional cleanings more comfortable by reducing the amount of buildup on your teeth and gums.
Pain-Free, Professional Teeth Cleanings in Jensen Beach, FL
If you’re in Jensen Beach and looking for a dental care team to provide you and your family with the best and most comfortable preventive care via routine teeth cleanings and oral exams, contact Dr. Christopher J. Wigley and the outstanding Jensen Beach Dental team to schedule an appointment!
Dentists recommend getting a teeth cleaning and exam every six months to maintain optimal oral health. These regular visits are crucial for preventing dental issues like cavities, gum disease, and plaque buildup.
During a teeth cleaning, the dentist removes plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing miss. An oral exam, meanwhile, involves a thorough inspection of a patient’s teeth, gums, and mouth. This often also includes x-rays to detect issues that aren't visible during a standard exam. These exams also allow your dentist to screen for early signs of certain oral health issues like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems and oral cancer, ensuring timely treatment.
It's worth noting that some individuals, especially those with a history of gum disease, may need more frequent cleanings. Consult your dentist for a personalized recommendation based on your oral health needs.
Sticking to a semiannual schedule promotes good oral hygiene habits, ensures prompt preventive care when necessary, and helps prevent far more costly and invasive dental procedures in the future.
Efficient, Effective Teeth Cleaning and Oral Exams in Jensen Beach, FL
If you’re in Jensen Beach and looking for a dental practice with extensive experience and expertise in providing top-quality routine preventive care to patients of all ages, contact Dr. Christopher J. Wigley and the friendly and knowledgeable Jensen Beach Dental team to schedule an appointment!
A teeth cleaning involves several steps, all of which aim to ensure thorough cleaning and examination of your teeth and gums.
First, a dental hygienist performs a physical exam of your entire mouth. This involves checking for signs of gingivitis (early gum disease) and other oral health concerns, like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues and oral cancer.
Next, using a tool called a “scaler,” they remove plaque and tartar from along your gumline and between your teeth. This part of the process can cause some slightly uncomfortable scraping sounds but is generally painless. After scaling, the hygienist polishes your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and special toothpaste. This helps remove any residual plaque and surface stains. After polishing comes a professional flossing to remove any leftover plaque or toothpaste.
The final step of a professional teeth cleaning is fluoride treatment, which helps protect your teeth against cavities. The fluoride, either in gel or foam form, is applied to a mouthpiece that fits over your teeth and is left on for a few minutes.
This comprehensive process leaves your mouth feeling fresh and plays a crucial preventive role in maintaining your long-term oral health.

Bad breath can result from poor oral hygiene or certain foods and beverages; however, it can also be a sign of a more significant underlying problem. Here's what you should know.
The Dark Side of Chronic Bad Breath
If your bad breath isn't alleviated with brushing, flossing, mouth rinse, gum, or mints, it may be an early sign of gum disease (gingivitis). Constant bad breath that you can't get rid of is a telltale sign of gingivitis, and it's a good idea to schedule a teeth cleaning and checkup with your dentist.
Gingivitis can be hard to detect at first because there's not really much pain associated with it, but some other signs to look for are red and swollen gums and bleeding during brushing and flossing.
When we identify gingivitis early, you can often reverse your condition with a professional teeth cleaning and some enhancements to your home care routine. If gum disease is allowed to progress, it will move into an advanced stage known as periodontitis.
If you suffer from periodontitis, you may notice pain or tenderness when eating, or tooth mobility.
Don't wait to contact your Jensen Beach dentist at (772) 334-4004 if you notice the early signs of gingivitis. You still have time to get your smile back on track!
Same Day Dental Emergency Appointments
Don't Let Dental Anxiety Stop You From Getting Treatment
We know that many patients have a fear of the dentist. Whether you had a bad experience in the past or you simply don’t like to have dental treatment, you might feel nervous about your appointment.
At Jensen Beach Dental, our team is incredibly gentle and compassionate. We welcome patients with warmth and care so that you can feel at home and relaxed while you are with us. When you need a little something extra to help you relax, we offer nitrous oxide.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a gas (often called “laughing gas”) that we administer with a combination of oxygen through a nose mask. Nitrous oxide enters your system quickly, helping you feel relaxed, and sometimes even euphoric. Many patients find that it takes the edge off of treatment and gives them that added confidence to follow through with their procedures.
Nitrous oxide enters your system quickly and leaves it quickly, too. You will feel normal just a few minutes after we stop administering the gas. It is incredibly safe and can even be used on children to help them settle down so that they can have the care they need.
Contact Us
If you have dental anxiety and feel that nitrous oxide might work for you, call our Jensen Beach dental office for an evaluation. We look forward to helping you have the care you need – comfortably.

Dental emergencies usually announce their arrival with severe tooth pain, broken teeth, or bleeding. A knocked-out tooth is an emergency that requires immediate treatment so we can save the tooth. Loose teeth are never normal; even if it is painless, it's still a major issue.
Another tell-tale sign of a dental emergency is symptoms of infection or abscess. Never treat a dental infection lightly; they need immediate treatment.

Invisalign Clear Braces
Getting braces when you have dental crowns is not uncommon. However, traditional metal braces will not be nearly as successful at aligning your teeth as you may expect. Metal brackets cannot effectively adhere to dental crowns, which will alter your results and leave you with a less-than-perfect smile.
But this is no reason to give up hope! Clear adult braces such as Invisalign ® can give you the show-stopping smile you’ve always wanted without the hassle and limitations of metal braces. As part of our commitment to helping patients achieve their smile goals, Jensen Beach Dental proudly offers Invisalign treatment for adults who want to correct their bite.
How Can Invisalign Help Me?
Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic device perfect for patients who want to discreetly straighten their smile. Fabricated from medical-grade plastic, Invisalign aligners, or trays, are virtually transparent and can be removed to enjoy your favorite meal. They are also molded and designed to fit your unique smile so your teeth can comfortably migrate into proper alignment.
If you have dental crowns, Invisalign clear aligners can protect your crowns and give you a more even grin in no time.
Call Us for Invisalign in Jensen Beach, FL
Patients who use Invisalign clear aligners are astonished by their results, and we understand why. For years, Invisalign has helped patients attain healthy, symmetrical smiles. With Invisalign, you can finally get the strong and healthy smile you have always wanted.
Dr. Wigley is an Invisalign-trained dentist who’s passionate about supporting patients on their journey to optimal oral health. To learn more about Invisalign in Jensen Beach, FL, you can call our office at (772) 334-4004.
Do you have crooked, overcrowded, improperly spaced, or uneven teeth?
For patients in Stuart, FL interested in improving their bite quality, speech, smile, and confidence, we offer Invisalign for a virtually invisible orthodontic experience.
Custom-Fit Orthodontic Treatment
Invisalign works very well to align teeth that have crowns (caps). The clear aligning trays are custom fit over and around your existing crown. Tooth movement will take place just like a tooth without a crown. Sometimes a small attachment needs to be bonded to a tooth to get it to move in the correct direction. Porcelain dental crowns can be predictably bonded.
Invisalign clear aligners are a modern way to comfortably and gently shift teeth without making a change in your smile's appearance. Our Stuart, FL patients can enjoy numerous benefits of clear orthodontics, including:
- Aligners are clear and unnoticeable
- Treatment is gentle, with new sets being switched out every two weeks
- Aligners can be removed for eating or brushing and flossing
- Invisalign is smooth and comfortable
Wearing Invisalign With Dental Crowns
Patients who have dental crowns aren't disqualified from enjoying the advantages of Invisalign. Straightening a smile with dental crowns is not much different than straightening natural teeth.
Since Invisalign uses clear trays that don't bond to your teeth like traditional metal braces, they can be custom-fabricated to fit over your teeth and dental crown. The procedure is straightforward and won't affect your Invisalign treatment. Dental crowns are bonded to your tooth for structural and cosmetic reasons.
For example, a badly damaged tooth can be supported with dental crowns. Likewise, a badly stained tooth can be made attractive again with handcrafted dental crowns. Since dental crowns are not anchored to the jawbone, teeth that have tooth crowns can be moved as well as teeth without crowns.
During your procedure, your Stuart, FL dentist will ensure that the aligner fit is secure and comfortable. We will check your dental crown to make sure it is bonded tightly to allow your teeth to gently shift into their aligned position.
At Jensen Beach Dental, our dentists are highly skilled at placing clear aligners, so dental crowns are typically not an issue.
Caring for Your Dental Crowns and Invisalign
Caring for your teeth is incredibly important to fight against tooth decay, infection, or disease.
Preventive measures are especially necessary when your teeth are vulnerable during dental treatment.
We recommend brushing and flossing daily and check for any abnormalities or complications. Patients can keep their Invisalign aligners clean by washing them gently and rinsing any time they are removed.
Having a natural-looking dental restoration won't prevent you from having a dazzling smile. Call us today to find out more about Invisalign and how it can enhance your life.

Easy, Pain-Free Teeth Straightening Treatment
Invisalign is not painful. There may be some minor soreness at the beginning of treatment and sometimes when you change to the next aligner tray in the treatment sequence you may experience some discomfort. Most patients find the trays to be very comfortable and pain-free. Invisalign is no more painful than routine braces utilizing brackets and wires.
Clear, Strong, Aligners
The invisalign aligners are made out of a clear plastic material that is very thin and strong. They are virtually invisible when they are in place. It is practically impossible for anyone to see them while you are wearing them. They are custom made to achieve the desired movements of your teeth to reach the desired result. Comfortable to wear yet easy to remove when brushing and flossing. Invisalign aligners are a great way to align and straighten your teeth.

If you are considering professional teeth whitening in Jensen Beach, FL, look no further than Jensen Beach Dental. We offer professional teeth whitening to our patients in two convenient ways: through both in-office and take-home treatments.
If you have sensitive teeth, you may have concerns about the effects of whitening treatments. Although teeth whitening treatments have been known to cause mild discomfort or increased sensitivity for those patients who already have sensitive teeth, teeth whitening should never hurt or cause significant amounts of irritation.
The Benefits of Professional Whitening
Unlike teeth whitening treatments purchased at a drugstore, our professional whitening kits are tailored to your mouth and the unique shape of your smile — which means gel that stays on your teeth and will not irritate your gums. The strength of the whitening gel can also be customized depending on your needs and your desired shade. Typically, less concentrated whitening gels are more gentle on sensitive teeth.
Whitening your teeth is a simple, mess-free way to instantly improve the look of your smile, and you should never have to worry about experiencing pain or have fears about whitening treatments. If you have concerns about teeth whitening, you can always call and talk to our caring dental staff or make a teeth whitening appointment to discuss your options for whitening your smile in Jensen Beach, FL.

If you need a dental crown in Jensen Beach, FL, you may be wondering how long the process takes. Thanks to advancements in dental technology, fitting a patient for and eventually placing a permanent crown is a relatively quick process.
You will typically receive your crown over the course of two separate visits to Jensen Beach Dental.
During your first visit, which will last approximately one hour, your tooth will be examined and evaluated by Dr. Wigley. Depending on the amount of damage to your tooth, our office may need to add a large filling called a core to the tooth to help improve structure and stability. We may also need to remove a portion of the existing tooth to make room for the porcelain crown.
At this first dental crown appointment, we will use a digital scan to obtain an impression of your tooth. This impression helps us create a temporary crown that is placed on the damaged tooth until the permanent crown is ready. Your permanent crown will be created by a skilled dental laboratory and usually takes several weeks to make.
Once the permanent crown is created and has been delivered to our office, you will return for a second appointment. At this appointment, we will bond the permanent crown to your existing tooth. It typically takes around 20 or 30 minutes to complete this process. After your crown has been placed, you are good to go!

Many of our patients who have just received a dental implant in Jensen Beach ask us if their implant will last forever.
Anatomy Of a Dental Implant in Jensen Beach
Dental implants are made up of three components: the titanium post inserted in the jawbone, the visible porcelain crown that rests on top, and the abutment that connects the two together. The titanium post acts as the structural support for your implant, much like a root would in a natural tooth.
The titanium portion of the implant, when properly cared for, can generally last forever and will likely never need to be replaced. The porcelain crown, however, is used for chewing and comes into contact with many different foods and surfaces each day. Just as the crowns of our natural teeth can become worn down or damaged over time, the crown on a dental implant will experience wear-and-tear.
Extending the Life of Your Dental Implant in Jensen Beach, FL
If you have recently received a dental implant, you probably already know that the key to maintaining the health of your implant is to practice strong oral hygiene habits. Continuing to brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly will give your implant the best chance for success.
Porcelain crowns typically last in the range of 10 to 15 years, and superior dental hygiene practices can extend the life of a crown even beyond 15 years! So, depending on your age and how well you take care of your implants, the crown portion will likely need to be replaced at least once during your lifetime.
If you still have questions about dental implants in Jensen Beach, FL, do not hesitate to contact our dental office.

Dentures Should Never Be Worn 24 Hours A Day.
Here at Jensen Beach Dental, Dr. Wigley recommends you sleep without your denture. You should clean your denture daily. Use a soft denture brush and do not use abrasive toothpaste. Toothpaste could cause minor scratches that will allow stains to develop more easily.
Soaking your denture in an over the counter denture cleaner daily is the best way to keep your denture looking brand new. Follow the manufacturer’s directions. Your denture should look as clean as the dishes you eat off of. They should not be stained and discolored.
You should also brush your tongue and gums daily. Use a normal toothbrush dipped in mouth wash for a clean refreshing feeling.
Store your denture at night in a clean carry case that is protected from pets and children.

Finding out if you need a new denture depends on how they broke. What is the reason for the failure? Is it a simple broken tooth or is there more to the story?
Every Fix Is Unique
Many times a tooth becomes unglued and can be replaced quite easily the same day. Other times the nature of the problem is not very apparent and there are other reasons that the denture may have broken. One reason may be a severely worn denture that has become very weak and as a result, teeth start to break. As acrylic teeth wear down over time, the denture can become weaker and thinner and more prone to fracture.

Here at Jensen Beach Dental, Dr. Wigley will evaluate all your options and get you the best solution for your denture problem. Most times you can have your repaired denture back the same day. If a new denture is needed, the turn around time isn't as long as you may think so give us a call.
Traditional dentures require relining periodically if you notice they feel loose or start to slip when you talk or eat.
This is common and completely normal and a denture reline will help your appliance to fit snugly again.
Why Do Dentures Become Loose?
Traditional dentures rely on a snug fit to your jawbone to keep them from moving and slipping. Over time, the pressure put on the bone causes some deterioration, which can lead to a compromised fit. Most dentures need to be relined every few months or once a year to ensure you can eat and chew with ease and confidence.
Stabilize Your Denture with Dental Implants in Jensen Beach
If you're struggling with an ill-fitting denture, dental implants may provide more stability. We can use a few carefully placed implants to support a denture that's designed to fit with the implants.
The implants hold the appliance securely in place so there's no slippage or movement during talking, eating, chewing, or laughing. The implants also provide the added benefit of keeping your bone stimulated so there's no deterioration.
If you'd like to learn more about traditional or implant dentures in Jensen Beach, we invite you to call us at (772) 334-4004.
Porcelain Veneers
Veneers do not damage teeth when done by a trained dental professional. Veneers actually restore mildly chipped or fractured teeth and improve the overall appearance of your smile. Your cosmetic dentist shapes and cements the veneer to the front-facing surface of your tooth, giving you a refreshed grin.
Dental Veneers Are Safe and Painless
Dental veneers are safe and pain-free. To ensure the porcelain veneer fits the tooth precisely, your dentist first removes a minimal amount of enamel that's the same thickness of the veneer shell––usually 0.5mm, which is about the same thickness of a fingernail.
Removing some of the enamel is the only way to ensure the veneer stays in place and looks natural. Your dentist uses a unique tool to rub away the enamel gently. Since enamel doesn't regrow, anyone considering veneers should be sure about the treatment.
Transform Your Smile with Porcelain Veneers
Ready to upgrade your grin with cosmetic dentistry? Veneers in Jensen Beach, FL, can certainly revamp your smile! Dental veneers are a popular solution and can easily give you a celebrity-caliber smile. And the best part is that it only takes two convenient dental appointments! Many patients make appointments before or after work or during their lunch break.
Call us today to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation with Dr. Christopher Wigley. Our Jensen Beach Dental looks forward to welcoming you to our dental office!
Porcelain veneers do not get cavities. However, the teeth they are bonded to can still develop decay, which is why it's essential to maintain good oral hygiene.
Porcelain veneers are an investment designed to last for many years, so it's only natural you'd want to take care of them to the best of your ability.
Here are some tips for maintaining your porcelain veneers and preventing tooth decay.
- Brush twice daily and floss once daily to remove cavity-causing plaque and bacteria.
- Don't use abrasive dental products, including gritty toothpaste that can scratch your veneers' smooth surface.
- Rinse with mouthwash regularly to prevent plaque buildup and gingivitis.
- Replace your toothbrush every few months to ensure your teeth and gums are properly cleaned.
- Drink plenty of water and eat a nutritious diet to keep your teeth healthy from the inside out.
- Avoid foods and beverages that cause cavities, like candies, pasta, bread, and sodas.

Root Canal Therapy
Many people falsely believe that root canal treatment is painful and involved. However, root canal treatment is a straightforward procedure on par with a dental filling. There is no need to put off this treatment that relieves pain and saves your infected tooth!
Why Root Canals Need to be Treated Quickly
A root canal treatment is a dental emergency because it means you have trauma to your tooth or a root infection. Infection can spread to other teeth or other parts of the body. For these reasons, waiting is never recommended. On the contrary, you should contact us right away.
If your dentist finds root infection during a routine exam—and you do not have pain—you may think that you can put off treatment indefinitely. However, the painlessness can be attributed to early infection or a tooth nerve that has already died. And just because you don’t have pain today—or too much pain—does not mean the infection will not lead to severe tooth pain later on.
Your root canal treatment means we numb the area, gently remove the root and pulp, close with a rinse and healing agent. You come back in a few weeks for a real filling or a dental crown. It’s all very simple.

Root canal treatment has received a bad reputation over the years since many people associate the procedure with pain. The truth is, a root canal actually relieves the pain and discomfort that is being caused by an infected or abscessed tooth.
How Jensen Beach Dental Prevents Pain During Root Canals
If you need a root canal in Stuart, FL, Dr. Wigley will ensure that your tooth is completely numb before your procedure. This also gives you immediate relief from the pain caused by your infection.
Next, he gently and skillfully removes the diseased tissue from inside your tooth and ensures that your tooth is infection-free. Your tooth will likely need to be strengthened with a permanent dental filling or tooth crown after it has had time to heal completely.
If you have a tooth that is causing you severe pain or constant discomfort, you must seek treatment as soon as possible. An infected tooth that is left untreated can result in further damage, more pain, and even tooth loss.

TMJ Treatment
Chronic pain can put a damper on a person’s overall health. Jaw pain is one type with which millions of people struggle each day. It contributes to migraines, facial pain, neck aches, even Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.
Dr. Christopher Wigley, your dentist in Jensen Beach, FL, is trained to help resolve TMJ disorders.
How We Treat TMJ Disorders
Dr. Wigley specializes in non-invasive treatments for TMJ and jaw pain. In most cases, he will recommend an occlusal splint, which is an oral appliance your wear, especially as you sleep.
A splint is similar to a nightguard but with a particular shape that repositions your jaw to align it properly. By creating support for this position, your jaw can relax and relieve stress on the musculature in your face.
Over the long term, wearing your splint will help your jaw’s new position become more permanent, so long as you get regular check-ups for adjustments to your splint if necessary. Our expertise allows us to create splints that accomplish an excellent fit to promote comfort and consistent use.

Your TMJ, which stands for temporomandibular joint, is what allows you to speak, chew, yawn, or do anything else that requires you to open your mouth. You use these joints hundreds of times every day, and when your TMJ is misaligned, stressed, or inflamed, you will inevitably experience jaw pain and a host of other symptoms.
TMJ Misalignment Should Be Corrected
If you suffer from a TMJ disorder, you will not experience significant relief until you begin treatment. This is because for your TMJ to work correctly, it relies on a soft disc of tissue to cushion between your skull and mandible or lower jaw. The longer this disc is stressed, the more damage you will do. The only way to preserve the disc is to fix its alignment.
Dr. Christopher Wigley can treat your TMJ with a mouthpiece-type appliance that repositions your jaw as you wear it. This new positioning strategy will encourage a better jaw position over time. We will also encourage exercises to strengthen your jaw muscles.

People who suffer from chronic stiffness and pain caused by a TMJ disorder need to seek treatment if they wish the problem to end. So, to start on the path towards healing and less jaw and facial pain, give us a call today.
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) means that the hinge-like joints, located at both jaws, are not functioning properly. This can lead to sporadic and even chronic pain, which means it is very important to treat TMJ before the pain becomes chronic and interferes with life quality.
Symptoms of TMJ Include:
- Clicking sound in the jaw when chewing or speaking
- Jaw pain
- Jaw stiffness
- Teeth that do not line up correctly
- Teeth grinding
- Locking jaw
- Facial or ear soreness
- Ringing in the ears
- Migraines or headaches
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
When your bite is off, this can cause other dental issues. Also, teeth grinding can lead to cavities and even tooth loss.
Treatment for TMJ
Treatment for TMJ may include occlusal splint therapy, which is similar to a nightguard. TMJ therapy with a splint helps guide your jaw into ideal alignment, which relieves pain, jaw clicking, and teeth grinding.
At Jensen Beach Dental, our splints are custom made to fit your mouth, and we provide adjustments regularly to the splint surface to help achieve the best outcome. We’ve seen many patients improve after only a few days.
Contact Us
If you suspect TMJ or have already been diagnosed, contact our Jensen Beach, FL dental office today for an assessment.
You may wake up with headaches if you grind your teeth or clench your jaws while sleeping. Teeth grinding (bruxism) not only wears down your teeth but also places immense pressure on your jaw joints. This constant pressure can cause pain to radiate through your face and head, leading to seemingly intolerable migraines and jaw pain.
TMJ and Bruxism
Bruxism is often associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMD or simply TMJ. Though symptoms vary with each person, TMJ can cause facial soreness, migraines, neckaches, jaw pain, and lockjaw, to name a few.
Custom Mouthguards for TMJ
Though many people consider using over-the-counter mouthguards, they are not nearly as effective or comfortable as those specifically designed for you. Personalized mouthguards fit your unique bite for increased comfort, and they protect your teeth and jaws from additional wear.
Mouthguards create a barrier of protection around your teeth as they gently guide your jaw into proper alignment. Not only do they alleviate the pressure on your jaw and face muscles, but they also promote improved jaw function so you can finally live your life without constant TMJ pain.
