What happens during a teeth cleaning?

A teeth cleaning involves several steps, all of which aim to ensure thorough cleaning and examination of your teeth and gums.

First, a dental hygienist performs a physical exam of your entire mouth. This involves checking for signs of gingivitis (early gum disease) and other oral health concerns, like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues and oral cancer.

Next, using a tool called a “scaler,” they remove plaque and tartar from along your gumline and between your teeth. This part of the process can cause some slightly uncomfortable scraping sounds but is generally painless. After scaling, the hygienist polishes your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and special toothpaste. This helps remove any residual plaque and surface stains. After polishing comes a professional flossing to remove any leftover plaque or toothpaste.

The final step of a professional teeth cleaning is fluoride treatment, which helps protect your teeth against cavities. The fluoride, either in gel or foam form, is applied to a mouthpiece that fits over your teeth and is left on for a few minutes.

This comprehensive process leaves your mouth feeling fresh and plays a crucial preventive role in maintaining your long-term oral health.
